How This Schedule Supports Learning
We intentionally developed the schedule to support student learning and development, for example:
This includes instruction in phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Students have daily opportunities to think deeply about books as a whole class, in a small guided reading group, and independently.
Our scholars write every day, giving them the knowledge, skills and habits of successful writers. They also have the opportunity to try their hand at different types of writing (expository, narrative, and persuasive) throughout the year.
In kindergarten, scholars begin exploring mathematical concepts using a variety of materials and techniques, and are exposed to many different types of problems. Our math curriculum introduces the scholars to a topic and then builds upon that concept as new ones are introduced.
A longer school day provides more time to delve deeper into complex topics of exploration, build literacy and numeracy skills, and foster meaningful relationships within classroom communities.
All of our scholars take special classes such as music, art, and Spanish. These classes allow our scholars to discover interests at a young age and are an essential part of a well-rounded education. Every scholar sees each specialist on a three-day rotating schedule.
